Ravenber Way
The Ravenber Way is a long distance walk which passes through two National Parks and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It commences at Ravenglass, it passes Lakeland's finest array of high peaks, climbs over the high Pennines, traverses the northern moors and ends at Berwick-upon-Tweed. The route follows existing rights of way in the form of footpaths, bridleways and tracks. The journey will take you through a diversity of attractive scenery including mountains, high hills, rolling moorland, expansive forests, lush river valleys and visits charming villages and towns with a wealth of fascinating local history.
From Ravenglass on the west coast of Cumbria the route meanders through the mountain heart of Lakeland to reach the Eden Valley. The route then climbs the high Pennines to East Allen Dale and Hexamshire, before arriving at the Roman Wall, a remarkable and fascinating World Heritage site. Beyond the Wall, the journey continues through the Northumberland Fell Country and Harwood Forest to reach the Simonside Hills. After pastoral Coquetdale it heads for the rolling Cheviot Hills, a paradise for hill walkers, and along the delightful leafy valley of the River Till. Finally, the trail follows the course of the mighty River Tweed to meet the North Sea and journeys end at historic Berwick, England’s most northerly town.
The guide book splits the route into fourteen day walk sections. The total distance of the main route is 210 miles (337 kilometres). For some sections alternative route options are provided. Each section begins with an essential information panel giving distance, terrain, height of ascent, highest elevation and OS Explorer map numbers. This is followed by information about features of interest along the way and then detailed route finding instructions supported by clear sketch maps drawn at an approximate 1:25,000 scale. There are mileage charts and useful practical information including camp sites, youth hostels and TIC contact details for accommodation planning. A link to an accommodation listing is provided.
